Alright, we are easing back into the New Year with this block. It's simple, but classic and fun. I used four different Scrappy Triangles, but you will be able to get some really fun effects by making four identical triangles. Each Scrappy Triangles foundation will make it's own unique secondary pattern when four are placed together. Play around and try out different options!<br />
<br />
The 12" Block option is simply made with four of these 6" blocks. More chances to see what you can make!<br />

<br />
Got an overflowing scrap bin, but aren't sure how to choose fabric for a scrap quilt? Have you seen scrap quilts that are, well, just plain ugly and want to avoid that? Me too!<br />
<br />
(Sometimes you want the crazy/ugly scrap look, and that is fine, but if not, keep reading.)<br />
<br />
I think the biggest mistake quilters make, when making a scrap quilt. is thinking that any fabric they use will work. To a certain extent that is true, but we have all seen quilts that somehow miss the mark and are a hot mess.<br />
<br />
How to avoid way too crazy scrap quilts? Edit your fabric. That's right, don't use everything. Throwing everything together can sometimes work, but it can often go wrong. I'm going to show you three ways that I choose fabric for my scrap quilts.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Edit by By Color</h3>
<div>
Just because it's a scrap quilt, it doesn't mean it needs every color in your scrap basket. Use the same process that you use to choose fabric for your 'normal' quilts to limit the pallet of your scrap quilt. This is one of my favorite ways to choose fabric for scrap quilts.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmXkJB-Yyw84_VKhynPT1gVjJ7sDyTT9RBoZfqguxCszAi20q6fOjrf1xBnob1RLu4hQ-tTsUazXiAvFiyJCkz8z1xcnpHsgM5f5B7zykvoLdGqB-XBIG3EkXgbHX41rNCPkhO1YXz3nUp/s1600/pink%252Byellow%252Bscrap%252Bquilt.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmXkJB-Yyw84_VKhynPT1gVjJ7sDyTT9RBoZfqguxCszAi20q6fOjrf1xBnob1RLu4hQ-tTsUazXiAvFiyJCkz8z1xcnpHsgM5f5B7zykvoLdGqB-XBIG3EkXgbHX41rNCPkhO1YXz3nUp/s640/pink%252Byellow%252Bscrap%252Bquilt.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For example, in this quilt I limited myself to yellows, pinks, and oranges with pops of green. Yellow, orange and pink/red are analogous (next to each other on the color wheel) so they naturally work together well. The pop of complementary green adds extra interest.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6S5qqo1oCPHYSXZI77YU6XJB1PT9WqvEAIWMNm5V3s_D489W312ALJrGIBtV-JhAlcTN_ngRrPniGCnAd_u-z7gR2S4soUa1BCabU_Ax9PIp13BtNp-M96Egilcx-pv0wvO5mtBhrA1d_/s1600/cheerful+scrap+quilt.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="548" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6S5qqo1oCPHYSXZI77YU6XJB1PT9WqvEAIWMNm5V3s_D489W312ALJrGIBtV-JhAlcTN_ngRrPniGCnAd_u-z7gR2S4soUa1BCabU_Ax9PIp13BtNp-M96Egilcx-pv0wvO5mtBhrA1d_/s640/cheerful+scrap+quilt.jpeg" width="547" /></a></div>
<br />
This version of the same quilt is a bit more chaotic, (I was going for quirky) but it still works well. I tried to limit it to clear (not muddy) tones with a heavier does of yellow and aqua.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiWWEdbh1RtJM4n239qfdjOSPmZEC_jzBY_T02atDAkHiWfTf7LeK4lfO2lo_VyQ71eUXC2GuR55Bgn7_sdVdmqjwctPIeWWgRQ7q3wLH6G6oxQnmmUjCmcBppZAOz-HCVRUKl7VGgFSNo/s1600/blue%252Bpurple%252Bcurved%252Bquilt.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiWWEdbh1RtJM4n239qfdjOSPmZEC_jzBY_T02atDAkHiWfTf7LeK4lfO2lo_VyQ71eUXC2GuR55Bgn7_sdVdmqjwctPIeWWgRQ7q3wLH6G6oxQnmmUjCmcBppZAOz-HCVRUKl7VGgFSNo/s640/blue%252Bpurple%252Bcurved%252Bquilt.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I dug out all my blue, purple and black scraps for this quilt. (It has yet to be finished, sigh...)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ8u9qn0tH3Z_VnMfpIdxkxn73IpvnsuDKZ-3E-YXCwzspr9ypQPcxQmf96m8o6SksBp1ACdlsKpgzqSEmNO707vuFqbEen-tvxMgGlPn_WYe_q9pAvldWxP7GA1-YrEBDHNUrpCTR0FgI/s1600/low+volume+quilt+car+fabric.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="485" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ8u9qn0tH3Z_VnMfpIdxkxn73IpvnsuDKZ-3E-YXCwzspr9ypQPcxQmf96m8o6SksBp1ACdlsKpgzqSEmNO707vuFqbEen-tvxMgGlPn_WYe_q9pAvldWxP7GA1-YrEBDHNUrpCTR0FgI/s640/low+volume+quilt+car+fabric.jpeg" width="484" /></a></div>
<br />
When I think of color, I also think of tone. Are the fabrics, light, dark, muddy, clear, ultra bright? Choosing fabrics with similar tones makes it more likely that they will work together. This quilt I made for my brother is made of a variety of low volume fabrics (lights) with bits of my favorite Echino leftovers.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpIt6gQDTwSR11M0QzgJO6EJ98sPvyYj4Ikbh6dEnvRf4e8LabVEyRSc2TMLedOBeosgt_0CbPRz1sdvdiBaQhtFELO2ZVrX1M-mTU6cqPhRkpOhCCJ_8QnM2Pt_C6t4HEZR_wvRLwyI-L/s1600/orange%252Bpink%252Btumbler%252Bquilt.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1016" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpIt6gQDTwSR11M0QzgJO6EJ98sPvyYj4Ikbh6dEnvRf4e8LabVEyRSc2TMLedOBeosgt_0CbPRz1sdvdiBaQhtFELO2ZVrX1M-mTU6cqPhRkpOhCCJ_8QnM2Pt_C6t4HEZR_wvRLwyI-L/s640/orange%252Bpink%252Btumbler%252Bquilt.JPG" width="628" /></a></div>
<br />
This orange and pink quilt is limited both by color and by value. There isn't a lot of contrast with these saturated colors. However, it works, because the design is so simple.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Edit By Designer</h3>
<div>
This might be the easiest way to choose fabrics for a scrap quilt. I don't know about you, but I have favorite designers and I tend to buy bits from multiple collections. How about pulling all of the scraps from one designer and using them in a quilt? A designer is going to have a cohesive color and style throughout their collections and most of their fabrics should work well together.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyOZadZhtgfy6Y2IqSSJ05brfJTkz8FVaFufnH5P4AHeoIsIPIdfDCBp68JRb92l-qf1z3PnFeHUKwKBkffIn8l8nF7EsBwTwJCbvEIYYIqlX3cHJL1BE_212nd8gt0HXXSTWIiDMphMrQ/s1600/P1050044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyOZadZhtgfy6Y2IqSSJ05brfJTkz8FVaFufnH5P4AHeoIsIPIdfDCBp68JRb92l-qf1z3PnFeHUKwKBkffIn8l8nF7EsBwTwJCbvEIYYIqlX3cHJL1BE_212nd8gt0HXXSTWIiDMphMrQ/s640/P1050044.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is a quilt where I used my bits of American Jane fabric.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-cRi4nWG8REh-KTBrbjk04MY8goTr_RSpJjvZMvdG0IQx-ajT7UMsaZcvunvCHHfnWI7XwILF4kgm6Guzgtl1r9HwFFGC9T_z8ZDE8aVzjqirVFewL5l7qTT7BLErHFKmxZfPc_IwgJ4/s1600/scrap+quilt+drapped+on+bench.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-cRi4nWG8REh-KTBrbjk04MY8goTr_RSpJjvZMvdG0IQx-ajT7UMsaZcvunvCHHfnWI7XwILF4kgm6Guzgtl1r9HwFFGC9T_z8ZDE8aVzjqirVFewL5l7qTT7BLErHFKmxZfPc_IwgJ4/s640/scrap+quilt+drapped+on+bench.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But don't feel like you have to be super strict about just using fabrics from one designer. You can start with fabrics from one and then add bits and pieces that go well with them. For example, this quit was mainly made with Denyse Schmidt fabrics with some Cotton & Steel thrown in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
This works great for reproduction fabrics. All 1930's reproduction fabrics look great together and Civil War reproductions blend well too. This Grandmother's Flower Garden had a million different fabrics in it, but it worked because they were are 1930's reproductions.</div>

You can also 'theme' by fabric type. With this quilt, I simply pulled out all my leftover bits (and fat quarters) of solids and started sewing them together.</div>

This is a little harder to see, but all of these fabrics are dot-like. Some have standard polka dots, some have dot-like flowers, or cherries, or square-shaped dots. It's subtile, but it works.<br />

This quilt's theme is obvious - Christmas! You can make any quilt a holiday quilt by combining fabrics in holiday colors. Grab all your red and green scraps for a Christmas quilt, your orange, blacks and purples for a Halloween quilt, and your reds and pinks for a Valentine's Day quilt.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
To Recap</h3>
<div>
You don't have to throw all your scraps together willy-nilly. Take a bit of time to sort them out and make a conscious decision about which ones you are going to use. Think about choosing fabric for you next scrap quilt based on color, designer or theme.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope this has been helpful. Let's go make some scrap quilts! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy sewing!<br />

I'm not going to lie, I did question my sanity a bit as I made this block. Sixteen 1" Scrappy Triangles? What was I thinking?!? :) But it was worth it!<br />
<br />
For extra flair, try using four of the same Scrappy Triangles in the middle. They will make a fun secondary pattern.<br />

I don't think that there is anything more classic than a pinwheel shape in quilting. It is simple, fun, and cute. In this quilt block tutorial, we will make 4 pinwheels out of foundation paper pieced Scrappy Triangles and join them together with some background squares. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is both a 6" and 12" version of the block. The size of the squares and triangles are different, but the block construction is the same for both blocks.</div>

<br />
Hello! It's week 4 in the Tiny Piecing Sampler. I think this might be one of the cutest blocks of the sampler, but maybe that's just because I used one of my favorite American Jane prints in it. It was one of the scraps that I had been holding onto for a long time. Anyone else do that? Well, it is fun to finally see it in a quilt. :)<br />
<br />
This quilt block goes together fairly quickly and you 'only' have to make 8 Scrappy Triangles. The directions for both the 6" and 12" versions follow.<br />
<br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
Instructions</h2>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
6" Block</h3>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Make:</b></div>
(8) 1" Scrappy Triangles<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Cut:</b></div>
White<br />
(1) 2 1/2" square<br />
(4) 1 1/2" squares<br />
(4) 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles<br />
<br />
Pink<br />
(2) 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles<br />
(2) 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
12" Block</h3>
<b>Make:</b><br />
(8) 2" Scrappy Triangles<br />
<br />
<b>Cut:</b><br />
White<br />
(1) 4 1/2" square<br />
(4) 2 1/2" squares<br />

<br />
Pink<br />
(2) 2 1/2" x4 1/2" rectangles<br />

<br />

2. Sew the Scrappy Triangles and the adjoining squares and rectangles together. Press the seams of the Scrappy Triangles open to reduce bulk and press seams towards the white squares and rectangles.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Sometimes the simplest things are the best. A whole quilt made just with half square triangles arranged like this has been on my bucket list for years, but for now, let's just make one block.<br />
<br />
The six and 12 inch block use different sized triangles for this block, but the construction is the same.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Instructions:</span><br />
<br />
<b>6" Block</b><br />
Make<br />
(9) 2" Scrappy Triangles<br />
<br />
<b>12" Block</b><br />
Make<br />
(16) 3" Scrappy Triangles<br />
<br />
-Arrange Scrappy Triangles into rows.<br />
-Sew together into rows.<br />
-Press.<br />
-Sew rows together.<br />

<br />
I think this is one of the funnest blocks. It's simple but when multiple are put together, the chains (the 4-patch units) make great secondary patterns.<br />
<br />
With this set of blocks, the 12" block is simply made from four of the 6" blocks.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Instructions: </span><br />
<br />
<b> 6" Block</b><br />
Make<br />
(2) 3" Scrappy Triangles<br />
Cut<br />
(4) 2" squares from white fabric<br />
(4) 2" squares from yellow print fabric<br />
<br />
<b> 6" Block</b><br />
Make<br />
(8) 3" Scrappy Triangles<br />
Cut<br />
(16) 2" squares from white fabric<br />
(16) 2" squares from yellow print fabric<br />

-Sew the yellow and white squares together into 4-patch units as illustrated.<br />
-Arrange the 3" Scrappy Triangles and 4-patch units as illustrated.<br />
-Sew together into rows.<br />
-Sew rows together<br />
<br />
For the 12" Block, repeat to make (4) 6" blocks.<br />
-Arrange the 4 block in two rows of two. Play with the orientation, if desired.<br />
-Sew together into rows.<br />
-Sew rows together<br />
<br />
Easy peasy, lemon squeezie! :)<br />
<br />
Note: We are going to be out of town next week for Thanksgiving, and internet access is going to be iffy. So I am going to skip posting next Tuesday and will be back with Block 3 on Nov 27th. If you are feeling itchy to sew, I'd just make a ton of Scrappy Triangles, especially 1" and 2" blocks. Then they will be ready to go as we make future blocks.<br />
<br />
See you then!<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am so excited to officially announce the release the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/651986901/fresh-scrappy-block-of-the-month-club?ref=shop_home_active_1">2019 Fresh & Scrappy Block of the Month Club</a>! This quilt is a cheerful celebration of all things scrappy. I designed this Block of the Month specifically to bust through fabric scraps and help you tame those scrap bins. (It's not just me, right?)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of my favorite things about this quilt is the variety of blocks. They are going to spark your creativity and keep you engaged and excited. There are flying geese, fans, log cabins, stars, flowers, chains and more! Most of the piecing is standard, but there will be some machine appliqué and the opportunity to make a block with curved seams. (There will be an option to appliqué this block, if desired.) There are also a variety of block sizes. There are 8", 12" and 16" squares, not to mention 8" x 12" and 8" x16" rectangles. There's nothing boring about this quilt!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Here are the details:</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-The finished size of the quilt is 56" x 72".</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-On the first of each month, starting January 2019, you will receive a pdf quilt block pattern via email. It will contain cutting and piecing instructions for that month’s block, along with tips for using scraps. We will usually make two of the given block, but some months we will make more. I have kept those blocks fast and simple, so it won’t be overwhelming.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-This pattern is perfect for both confident beginners and longtime quilters who want to play with their scraps!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-I am selling on Etsy and the patterns will be sent to the address associated with your Etsy account. If you would like me to email the patterns to a different address, please let me know in the Notes to Seller box when you check out. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-Today you will be able to download and print the Fabric Requirements and a Coloring Page. Use the coloring page to try out different color combinations or to color in the blocks as we make them.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last year, I shared a pattern for 6" Scrappy Triangles each Tuesday during the <a href="http://sewnbyleila.blogspot.com/2017/10/year-of-scrappy-triangles.html">Year of Scrappy Triangles</a>. It was so much fun to bust scraps with those foundation paper pieced half square triangles! (If you missed it, you can find links to all the patterns <a href="http://sewnbyleila.blogspot.com/2017/10/year-of-scrappy-triangles.html">here</a>.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I want to keep the momentum from the last year, and have decided to post tutorials for quilt blocks that use the 1", 2" & 3" Scrappy Triangles in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia">Tiny Piecing Collection</a>. (<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/623290743/scrappy-triangle-pattern-bundle-1-2-3?ref=shop_home_active_2">You can find patterns here.</a>) Each Tuesday for the next 12 weeks, I will post a tutorial for a 6" and 12" version of the same quilt block. I'll post links to all the blocks here. By the end we'll have enough blocks for a cute mini quilt or small throw. Swing by next Tuesday to find the first tutorial.</div>

I feel like we need to have a party. Everyone just plan on coming over to my house this evening with all their quilt blocks. :) Because we did it! One year of weekly Scrappy Triangles! That is huge. Give yourselves a big pat on the back and go brag to a friend. :)<br />

I have to admit something. I jumped ahead and made the last few blocks early and my finished quilt is at the quilters right now. (!!!) I cannot wait to get it back and show you! Because I have been using low-volume/lights all year, the pattern is fairly subtle, but I like it. I wanted something calm and neutral for my bedroom. If you can call a quilt with hundreds of different fabrics calm? :)<br />
<br />
Looking forward, I am going to start a smaller short term scrappy project. Next week I am going to start posting mini tutorials for quilt blocks made with the smaller 1", 2" & 3" Scrappy Triangles. There will be both 6" and 12" options and there will be 12 blocks total. I've made a couple up and they are so. stinking. cute. Stop by next Tuesday and see first one. (You can <span style="text-align: center;">find the patterns for the 1, 2 & 3" Scrappy Triangles in my </span><a href="https://www.craftsy.com/profile/leila-gardunia-quilts" style="text-align: center;">Craftsy</a><span style="text-align: center;"> or </span><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia" style="text-align: center;">Etsy</a><span style="text-align: center;"> shops.)</span><br />

I am also getting ready to announce the details of a Scrappy Block of the Month pattern for 2019. It is specifically designed to use scrap fabric and is pretty epic, if I do say so myself. I'll be sending out all the info via <a href="https://mailchi.mp/266ee68fec58/sewn-by-leila-newsletter-sign-up">newsletter</a>, plus a newsletter only coupon code in a few weeks. If you haven't signed up yet, <a href="https://mailchi.mp/266ee68fec58/sewn-by-leila-newsletter-sign-up">you can do so here</a>. It will be the best way to make sure you don't miss it.<br />
<br />
Thanks again making Scrappy Triangles along with me this year. It was so much fun! (hugs and high fives all around!)<br />

A couple of weeks ago, I counted up all my blocks and found I needed to make a ton more to have enough for a queen sized quilt, so I drafted this block. Quick, easy and great for larger scale prints!<br />

It's starting to feel like fall! Well, not really. It's going to be in the 80's today, but the leaves are starting to change colors. I tried to use some of the fall colors in these blocks.<br />
<br />
This is another scrappy triangle that would look great repeated. I really have a thing for small triangles with perfect points. :) Enjoy!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Hi there! We got back from our France trip last week and I think I am finally getting back into the swing of things. It feels like forever since I've sewn Scrappy Triangles and I was glad to get back to sewing!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I designed these simple strip blocks because I realized that I am going to be short of blocks for the queen sized quilt I want to make. I figured I could make a ton of these fairly quickly to fill in the gap. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
How are your blocks going? Are you going to have enough to make your quilt?</div>

Hi there! Here is the next block in the series. I really like this one. The quilt block unit in the corner is called a 'Hidden Square' and you can find them in all sorts of quilt patterns.<br />
<br />
I just want to let you know, that I am going to be taking next week off. My husband and I are going to France (our first big kid-free trip!) and I don't want to have to fuss with scheduling a post before I go.<br />
<br />
I am so excited to go back to France. I was there for a year and a half as a missionary 20 years ago and haven't been back since. We are going to spend a few days in Paris, followed by a weekend in Brittany (west coast). I can't wait! I'll be posting tons of pictures for my kids in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sewn.by.leila.gardunia/">Instagram stories</a> if you want to follow our trip. I am <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sewn.by.leila.gardunia/">@sewn.by.leila.gardunia</a>.<br />

<br />
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. Vacation, the Iowa State Fair, packing for college, gathering school supplies for all kids, suit shopping, hair cuts, dropping off at college (lots of tears were shed, and I'm not sappy), then cleaning and recovering from the whirlwind. It has been crazy, and I am trying to find the new normal with all the kids at school. We'll see how it goes. I need to get myself organized.<br />
<br />
But I did manage to draft all the rest of the blocks yesterday for the Year of Scrappy Triangles. Crazy that we just have a few more weeks. It was hard to come up with designs for the last few. Some of them, like this one, are variations on previous blocks. I hope you enjoy making it. It uses 2 1/2" strips, so dig out those leftover strips and let's get sewing! :)<br />

The last two weeks have been super busy. Vacation (which is suppose to be relaxing?) and now getting ready for the first day of school for the younger kids and driving my oldest to college tomorrow morning. Crazy!<br />
<br />
I won't say more (no time), but I'll leave you with the template for this week's block, and let you know how it all went next week. :)<br />

<br />
I love this block! It is rather time consuming, but I am loving those little stripes. Plus, the secondary design is pretty fun.<br />
<br />
I used pink scraps from the quilt I am currently working on for my daughter. She leaves for college in two weeks and I want to have it done by then. I'm almost done with the blocks. "All" I have to do is sew them together, baste, quilt, and bind. Oh, and we are going to be on vacation for one of those weeks.... I'll let you know how it goes.<br />
<br />
As we are going on one last/first trip of the summer next week, there will not be a block posted next Tuesday, but we will get back into the swing of things the following week. I'll see you then!<br />

Block 42 - the perfect block for using up narrow strips and leftover charm squares!<br />

<br />
I am really loving this week's block. The strip of tiny triangles at the bottom reminds me of the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/609449846/scrappy-strips-pattern-bundle-1-2?ref=related-7">Scrappy Strips</a> in the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/623292039/complete-tiny-piecing-collection-1-2-3?ref=shop_home_active_1">Tiny Piecing Collection</a>. (swoon) Not only are they super cute, but I was able to use some 2 1/2" precut squares that had been hanging out in my scrap basket forever.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjztv100L_qutTnH_I78YnOiq8Nze-mdq_pwvcTH0AMjuSNITXi86ZtMHYIFgT_OWUN8AeIPpg7tslzHwQepdx1TC9QfJL3eR6nUNFylz96RGb9ROjlN5AqVQh4ebhg5Z6rMYBlGDvYueTe/s1600/fullsizeoutput_4727.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Free 6" foundation paper pieced quilt block patterns tutorials perfect for using scraps and leftover fabric" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjztv100L_qutTnH_I78YnOiq8Nze-mdq_pwvcTH0AMjuSNITXi86ZtMHYIFgT_OWUN8AeIPpg7tslzHwQepdx1TC9QfJL3eR6nUNFylz96RGb9ROjlN5AqVQh4ebhg5Z6rMYBlGDvYueTe/s640/fullsizeoutput_4727.jpeg" title="Year of Scrappy Triangles - Block 42" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Extra bonus? My husband really likes the horses. When I told him that was good because they were going to end up on our bed, he quipped, "Horses on the bed? That's going to be messy!" Eye roll. He thinks he's funny.<br />

<br />
Hi there! Here is Block 40 in the Year of Scrappy Triangles. I can't believe we are up to 40 already! Only 11 more. Crazy.<br />
<br />
This is another block that is perfect for using up strips of all lengths and widths. So many strips - yet there are still so many strips in my strip pile! I think they are multiplying. :)<br />

<br />
How are you guys feeling about these Scrappy Triangles? At the beginning, a couple people asked if we would continue through 100. Anyone still want to do that? Or have you gotten your fill? I don't know if I am up for 48 more weeks of posting, but I would consider writing a pattern for the remaining 48 blocks if there was interest. Significant interest. So let me know what you think.<br />
<br />
Is anyone interested in a Scrap Busting Block of the Month next year? Or a foundation paper pieced BOM? Or more tiny foundation paper pieced patterns? (See my first <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia">Tiny Piecing Collection</a> here.) I'm starting to look forward into fall and 2019 and want to do something that would be enjoyable and useful for all of us.<br />
<br />

Have you ever had one of those days/weeks? I have. So this week we are making a <i>super simple</i> Scrappy Triangle. Just give the center section a good pin to avoid it slipping around and have fun piecing!<br />

Now on to this week's block. I'm not going to lie. I think I could have done better with my fabric choices. There is a cute little framed area that is great for putting a fussy cut motif, but somehow....<br />
<br />
That's ok. Not every block needs to be my favorite and it will look just fine mixed in with the others. Here's the download, but keep reading, because I've got some great news!<br />

Edited: The Tiny Piecing Collection is now Available!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can find all the patterns in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia">Etsy Shop</a>!</div>
<br />
A few months ago, I started playing around with the idea of making tiny Scrappy Triangles. How small <i>could</i> I make them?<br />
<br />
I drafted 16 tiny 1" Scrappy Triangles, then drafted some more in 2" and 3". Then came the 1" and 2" Scrappy Strips. I'm calling this set of patterns The <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia">Tiny Piecing Collection</a> and they are going to be available Thursday (6/28)! Let me give you a sneak peek at this new collection!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3B2JH22OPWNYsNzwInlht8Sqca9MfoJBFqR7vIE74fJsVfbGs2xsv0BqCOyAegPGUgP-B-lY-UhOPG1Mrushs9c2KpKywYr1V5YkOi7gLEWf0gQEmgnS6BhgOyjJTziIYc8iOlKY14pJE/s640/fullsizeoutput_46fc.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are some of the 2" Scrappy Triangles. There are templates for 18 triangles in this set and I think they are the cutest thing ever. The great thing about these triangles is that you can use your smallest scraps to make them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeilaGardunia"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYJLGULRnpXOAHwLxJQ_3EMgIhuIDTYDjg_LTxVvO-5-Wy98uKmzb6ZHXPXcKT97SMU1pXdkbBZC0kpjttZ64Fbz2fIa2lukzElrqbdPtlxFoaKs61ZiFwrO6H_DemD8JouTC1R8zO3pIp/s640/fullsizeoutput_4701.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Scrappy Strips are simply a row of Scrappy Triangles sewn together as one unit. Sewing them this way speeds the piecing and reduces bulk from seam allowances. In addition to strips of Scrappy Triangles, there are also striped and abstract strips in each Scrappy Strip set.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Plus, each set of templates comes with a pattern for a bonus quilt block or other small project. Here is the quilt block made with the 2" Scrappy Strips.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
I always think it is fun to see behind the scenes shots, so here is a picture of my photo shoot set up. Yup, that is my ancient cutting board being used as a background for the 3" Scrappy Triangles on my deck. That's how the pros do it. ;)<br />
