On June 17th I am going to be kicking off the “We Can Do It! Skill Builder Sampler.” You can just call it the Skill Builder Sampler or SBS if you want. :) Some of the recent blogland talk got me thinking about things that I want to try out in my quilting. I realized I was just a bit scared and nervous about trying new things. It is always easier to try something new with a friend and so I hope we can all work through this sampler quilt together. Each month I will focus on a different quilting skill and provide tutorials for three 12 inch quilt blocks using the month's skill. Some of the skills you might already have – please, leave any advice or additional tips in the comments for us – but I know there will be something for everyone to learn.
I have designed this sampler so that a beginning quilter can easily move from block to block and build their quilting skills. The beginning blocks will review basic skills and concepts that can be applied to any quilt. I will liberally reference other blogs and tutorials which have already described and explained the techniques and skills we will be learning.
Here is the outline for Skill Builder Sampler:
June:
Skills: Cutting, ¼ inch seam allowance and value.
Blocks: Log Cabin and Around the World
July: Half Square Triangles and Quarter Square Triangles
August: Flying Geese
September: Wonky Blocks
October: Foundation Piecing
November: Paper Piecing
December: Raw Edge and Needle Turn Applique
January: Curves
February: Improvisational Blocks
March: Working with odd shapes (tumblers, hexagons, apple cores)
April: Inset Seams
May: “There's no way I can sew that block!!!” - but you totally can because we now have the Skillz.
(we will also learn how to draft and use templates - those skill will be used in multiple months)
The first three weeks of each month we will make blocks based on that set of skills and the forth week will be a catch up week. Everyone who is caught up at the end of the month will be entered in a drawing for a special prize. (Probably fabric, because everyone Loves fabric, right?)
By the end of the year you will have 36 twelve inch blocks you can make into a queen sized quilt or you can divide them up and make several smaller quilts. But more importantly, you will have the skills and the confidence to tackle any quilting project you can dream up. Priceless.
............
Edited (5/15): The Skill Builder Sampler will is available for purchase in book form! It has been renamed "You Can Quilt! Building Skills for Beginners" but covers the same skills with the easy, medium and challenging blocks and is a million times better than the original quilt along. It is perfect for the beginning quilter or the experienced quilter who wants to branch out and learn new skills. Find more information and order a signed copy in my Etsy shop or order on Amazon
. Because of the release of the book some posts have been removed.
............
For this to work, I need your help. Doing new things is fun and easy with friends, but truth be told, I don't have a million and one online friends. Truth is, not everyone will want to participate in this Skill Builder Sampler. That's ok, but I want everyone to be able to check it out and decided if it is right for them.
Could you help me get the word out? I'll bribe you.... :) I have two fat quarter stacks of fabric just waiting to go to a good home. One of Denyse Schmit's new line of fabric and a stack of Japanese fairy tale prints.
For a chance to win:

I like the Japanese fabric. Skill building is great and will enable you to meet other people too. Sharing ideas is the best way to learn

Blogged about it! I'm so excited!
ReplyDeletehttp://mamabubbles.blogspot.com/2011/05/moving-on-pun-intended-let-quilting.html
Oh man, I have no idea what you might be missing there! Sounds good to me. Will have to follow along. :)
ReplyDeleteI am keen on the Japanese prints!
It looks like you've covered just about everything! I'll look forward to this project. The DS bundle would be a great addition to this or another project!
ReplyDeleteCount me in for the skill builder. Sophie told us about you on the blocklotto site. I'll be sharing your site on my school Website (I teach high school sewing in North Carolina). I always have students do one small quilt project in the second year course and some of them devleop an interest in quilting that they continue to pursue. A number of them have done charity quilts as part of their Senior Project. Several of my "quilters" are graduating this year and this will be a great encouragement for them to continue with this craft after high school. While my students would prefer the Japanese cartoons, I would love the DS fabrics. I'm going to look for them in my local JoAnns. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteOh - a piece of advice for new quilters- if you're like me and have more than one machine in your sewing room (or the school's sewing lab or you sew both at home and at grandma's), always piece on the same machine OR use a seam gauge to recheck seam widths when you change machines. You think the stitch guides (lines on the throat plate) are the same, but when it comes to precision piecing, they are not! I found this out the hard way when I would piece at home and piece on the SAME MAKE and MODEL machine at school and then try to combine the blocks. Minute differences add up if a block has a lot of pieces.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! The only suggestion I had was to add a list of requirements, but I see you just did :)
ReplyDeleteI'd be thrilled with either fabric set if I was lucky enough to win!

I blogged about this too...have a look

Thanks a mil!
Love the Japanese prints! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that fairytale fabric! Great idea too!
ReplyDeleteI have never officially started quilting yet,..but discovering how and what I want to do. :) The fabric is to die for! I would love to win!
ReplyDeleteTrendymeg@msn.com
What a fun idea--I'll try to keep up!
ReplyDeleteWhile I love both sets, I'm putting my name in the hat for the DS fabrics.
Thanks for a chance to win! Love them both!
ReplyDeleteThose topics sound great. How about taking a block that didn't turn out and re-vamping it into something great?
ReplyDeleteDenyse Schmidt please!

ReplyDeleteDenyse Schmidt please!
Lovely! Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new to sewing, so I don't know what to add. I like the first set.
lovelydomesticdiva (at) gmail (dot) com
I really need to work on my skills!
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything you've missed, I'm especially excited about December's needle turn applique!
ReplyDeleteI added the button to my blog!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog thanks to the SMS giveaway day. I like this idea you are scheming and am now planning on following along.
ReplyDeleteI quite like the Japanese prints.
anna [at] 64colorbox [dot] com
I think you've got everything covered for gaining skills, except for a push in the rear for some people...like me! I've done most everything except mitering borders and Y-seams...they seem to be 2 things I avoid so maybe those are things you could add (oops, you have inset seams in April). Looking forward to your future posts.
ReplyDeleteI would like Denyse Schmit's line of fabrics if I won; they ROCK!
This sounds like a wonderful time to learn - I think you've covered everything except free motion quilting. I think I'll sign up to follow you so I can play along. Thanks for the chance to win fabric. I love both - if I win you pick for me.
ReplyDeleteThis sampler quilt along sounds like its going to be a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteThis skill building course is an excellent idea. A suggestion I can offer is a section for us real beginners that would cover tools and terminology. I'll tweet via SuesSewCrafty.
ReplyDeleteJust tweeted your segment via my twitter account SuesSewCrafty ... If I'm lucky enough to win, and can give my preference, I really like the Japanese prints. They're so fun and quirky.
ReplyDeleteBoth fabric sets are excellent but I like the first set best. Love this idea - think your list is great.

I recently saw a quilters grid here that may help: http://heatherkojan.blogspot.com/2011/04/using-quilters-grid-tutorial.html Thank you for the giveaway. I really like the new Schmidt line!
ReplyDeleteI tweeted this (5oncover). Thank you again (: izazbz at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great series--can't wait for it to start and build my skills! How about a follow-up on putting it all together once you've made your 36 blocks?
ReplyDeleteWould love to win the first set of fabric!
I love your skill builder sampler idea! I think I might join in--but I don't have a blog--and it's a busy summer, so I don't know if I'll be able to keep up...
ReplyDeleteI like both sets of fabric, but I think the second is my favorite.
I don't have a blog but I emailed all my quilty friends & followed you so I don't miss the Sampler - great idea! I would love some DS fabrics. Annmarie (tegens@charter.net)
ReplyDeleteDude! I can't help you. I need to learn all of those skills you mentioned. Sorry. But I'm looking
ReplyDeleteforward to learning. It's a really neat idea.
I like the Japanese prints.
I would LOVE the fairy tale set! So cute. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love the first collection, and I think this is a great idea! I'd love to gain some new quilting skills.
ReplyDeletelydia(dot)hirschi(at)gmail(dot)com
This is perfect for me so I am in, its exactly where I am and feeling pretty stuck so its a Godsend to find you at this time!!!
ReplyDeleteI want to try this. Looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteI like the Denyse Schmidt fabrics, but the Japanese ones are something different I'd love to play with. Good luck to you!
ReplyDeleteCool idea, so I'll follow and see if I want to play along.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! As I'm quite new to quilting, I look forward to joining in the fun and building my skills!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway too - sorry I don't blog. I'd be delighted to win either bundle of fabrics as both are gorgeous!
I'm new to quilting so unfortunatley I do not have advice. Thank you so much for this giveaway! I love both, but the 2nd pack would be my favorite :)
ReplyDeletemzanfardino(at)nc.rr(dot)com
This is a great idea. I really need some motivation....thanks! Love the Japanese fabric. Thanks for the give-away chance.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea! I'm definitely going to try to follow along. Based on my limited knowledge, the topics seem awesome for making the blocks. But I'd love to see a bonus month about the binding? That was the scariest part when I made my one and only quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love the Japanese fabric. Thanks!
I've blogged about it here: http://sawkmonkey.blogspot.com/2011/05/quilting-insanity.html
ReplyDeleteAnd I believe I will mention it elsewhere :)
I've put the button on my sidebar.
ReplyDeleteI'm a beginning quilter so I can't recommend any skills to add, but one thing that I think would be nice is if you mentioned a place we could donate our sampler blocks. I'm excited to follow along and have fun expanding my skills by completing all the blocks, but I don't actually like sampler quilts so probably wouldn't end up putting the blocks together into a quilt. :}
ReplyDeleteI like the fairy prints. Thanks for hosting this!
OK I blogged about this on my blog; sounds like a GREAT idea....I've wanted to quilt for a very long time!
ReplyDeleteI think I like the Japanese set the best!
ReplyDeleteI love the second set - the cute Japanese fabrics. thank you!
ReplyDeleteHey, I put the button on my blog!
ReplyDeleteI have published a blog post on my blog all about this. I can't wait for it to start! Potatocraft.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI put the button up on my blog finally! :)
ReplyDeleteI blogged about the quilt-along! Can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeletehttp://my-crafty-crap.blogspot.com/2011/05/skill-builder-sampler.html
I would love to see somehting about applique or hand quilting. These are two skills that I just plain have not developed.
ReplyDeleteI love the Denyse Schmit collect that you have there just a little more than the other.
Google account has been acting up. So just incase it doesn't log in again here is my email. stitchingnine@hotmail.com (April Mae)
I don't currently have a blog but I took the time to talk about your blog and the skill builder on my facebook. I think that's a valiant effort.
ReplyDeleteGoogle account didn't let me log in last post so let's do a repeat. stitchingnine@hotmail.com (April Mae)
Oooh! This is great! I literally just started quilting last weekend and would love the chance to develop some mean skillz!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I have a few things that I am intimidated to learn...paper piecing and flying geese among them. I'm not sure why. Great excuse to learn now! I have a blog post scheduled for 05/28 about this and I added your button! http://takenpatiently.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI like the first bunch best. Both are cute though!
I posted about this in my blog!
ReplyDeletehttp://esther.pawliw.com/
It's just a baby blog for now...hoping it'll grow soon!
I also just put your button on my blog! Thanks!
ReplyDeletei would be interested in participating. i have never made a quilt before but have always wanted to. Also, I was wondering if you could give me an idea of how many extra blocks i would need to make if I would like to make this a king size quilt?
ReplyDeleteNine patches are also difficult for beginners - matching seams and pressing for flat seam intersections. That might be a good first block for a beginner.
ReplyDeleteI'm participating and I'll leave your post translated into Portuguese on my page. Already left his imprint, and will participate in the BOM, I love this all possible!

Great idea! Just what I've been waiting for. It's a bit scary though. The button is on my sidebar.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited...because I want to join you! I need more skills...and this is a great way to learn them...thanks for putting this together!

I blogged!

Will you have a flickr group too? Thanks for putting this together!
I just finished my first quilt top on an old Sears sewing machine (garage sale find!) and am anxious to learn more techniques. I would like to hear advice on what to look for in a new sewing machine. I was looking at a Janome 2011 and want a machine that I can grow with in quilting. Thanks for this learning opportunity. I hope I can keep up with the group! Both bundles of fabric are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI have your button on my side bar of my blog! :)
ReplyDeleteI blogged about the Skill Builder Sampler at http://pumpkinhollowprimitives.blogspot.com/2011/05/learn-to-perfect-quilting-techniques.html . I am so excited about this project. Now, I have to go find some fabric! :)
ReplyDeleteOlá, eu gostaria de seguir vc mas não consegui acessar.
ReplyDeleteHi, i'm thrilled to join this SBS! the button is on my side bar already!

i loved Denyse Schmit's fabrics!

To me the scariest part of quilting is the actual quilting. I think some time should be dedicated to finishing the quilt. Mitered borders, bindings, and of course - quilting. (c: I posted this to my facebook page, don't blog much. Also, my interest is in the top batch of fabrics. (c:
ReplyDeleteI like the Japanese storyteller fabrics best. I've tried hand quilting, and don't have the patience for it. I love going to quilt fairs and looking at the beautiful quilts.
ReplyDeleteBlogged about your giveaway.
ReplyDeletehttp://kingmtntreasures.blogspot.com/2011/05/enter-to-win-these-great-giveaways.html
I love Denyse Schmidt's new line of fabric!
ReplyDeleteI put your Skill Builder button on my blog!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of this skill building series! But I'm afraid that I have too many things going on for the summer and won't be able to hang out at my sewing machine very much. I will definitely watch to see what everyone's creating though. Thanks so much for the post on choosing fabrics and color value - I'm new to quilting and you shared great advice!
ReplyDeleteI've added your button to my blog...
ReplyDeletehttp://domesticartisan.blogspot.com/
and plan to blog about it soon!
Hi, I've just blogged about SBS...I'm only new sorry so not many followers but telling friends also : )
ReplyDeletehttp://domesticartisan.blogspot.com/
I'm looking forward to participate! I want to learn how to quilt and this seems like a most excellent project to get started.
ReplyDeleteA suggestion, if possible it would be great to get some suggestions for online places to buy supplies in Europe to keep shipping costs low.
Blog about the Skill Builder Sampler, Done!
ReplyDeletehttp://cardingstories.wordpress.com/2011/05/30/skill-builder-sampler/
Put the button in your sidebar, also done! :D
ReplyDeleteI'd love to learn curves and not be afraid to tackle them. I'd say some advice would be to keep trying for accuracy in seams to make everything fit together perfectly in the end. i'd love the first fabric pack.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try this. I recently (as in, less than a week ago!) got bit by the quilting bug, thanks to my friends taking me to a quilting/friendship night at the local quilt shop. I was super bummed when the next class I can take isn't until September or October, so I might just try and follow this along. :D :D thanks for putting it together! both fabric sets are super cute!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great idea, I shall certainly be checking in to see each block
ReplyDeleteLogo added to my blog
ReplyDeleteThat fairytale fabric is so cute!
ReplyDeleteSounds great! The 2nd set of fabrics are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHello! I'm not sure if I'm too late to enter, I just found this today, but I decided to give it a whirl anyway! SBS looks like it will be alot of fun :) I'd like the Japanese fairytale fabrics if I'm selected, please
ReplyDeleteI just blogged about SBS - definately info that needs to be shared :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely *love* this button! of course I put it in my sidebar :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a blog to share the news, but I did Tweet your info. I am so new at this quilting thing that I would be VERY interested in the basics. I'm sure everyone you talk to knows what a FQ is. To me? It was a LOT of googling and stuff to try to figure it out. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have blogged about it here http://craftsfromkaren.blogspot.com/2011/06/im-signing-up.html
ReplyDeleteI have also added the button to my sidebar :o)
ReplyDeleteHi, I will be following along. Looking forward to learning a lot of new skills.
ReplyDeleteSounds like great fun. I love the Japanese Fairy tales fabrics. Looking forward to trying the quilt.
ReplyDeleteI just found this! What a Terrific idea! I am going to be trying to do this!! Love it!! :) Going to share-I know the giveaway is closed but what an awesome challenge. I do the block a month at our local shop but there are things on here that I won't be learning there. Can't wait to get started!! :)
ReplyDeleteJust found this also. I will pass the information on to our church group who makes quilts for various missions, in and out of the USA.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really good idea for a lot of us. Thanks
ReplyDeleteOh I only just found your blog today! :( Hopefully not too late to catch up with the rest of the class!! Thank you for doing this xx
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and this Skill Builder idea today. I'd love to learn a lot of these skills. I'm just getting started doing the Farmer's Wife sampler that everyone is working on. Maybe the two will go hand in hand. Thanks for all your efforts. I still have to check out the rest of your posts about this subject.
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled upon this and hope to join in. I also just blogged today that I am not committing to ANYTHING...so this isn't a commitment. Just a wish that I can follow along. I will try. :)
ReplyDeleteI have just stumbled upon this skill builder. I will be participating. I am a little behind from the beginning, but I should be able to catch up in a couple of months.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, count me in! I've only been quilting for about a year and there is still soooo much to learn. Love the DS fabric. Thank for the awesome giveaway :-)
ReplyDelete
