More Star Flowers

This week I discovered that if I put my feet up and iced them regularly throughout the day they didn't get nearly as swollen as usual.  Oh, the joys of pregnancy!  On the bright side, this gave me a chance to make quite a few new Star Flowers - I think that is what I am going to call them (unless they have a real name?).

My spacer Flea Market Fancy fabric also came in the mail and I got to work joining them together.  I am not so sure about it.

Here are some more flower stars laid over the fabric.  It just looks like a mushy mess to me.  (And I have no idea why my camera refuses to take crisp pictures of these blocks!  Grrr.)  Or am I just not daring?  Both my husband and daughter suggested white fabric instead of the floral.

So here is a roughly edited picture with white spacer hexagons.

 Solid or dotted turquoise?

 Gray?

Or black?  I think a black and white dot might be the best choice.   What do you think?

Thanks for all of your input on the star flowers and the fair block.  I really, really, really truly appreciate it even if I a total rubbish at responding to comments.  I decided to make the Belted Star block for the fair and it is perfect -- except for one fatal flaw.  I'll unpick it and tell you the whole story soon.  :)

  3. Oh, I like that Gray! But I have been in a Gray fabric mood lately.... so maybe I am not the best judge.

  4. The FMF does look pretty busy...I like the gray, too, but I think black would pull it together nicely.

  5. I just love the way these star flower blocks are coming along--the b/w stars are crazy-amazing! I'm not falling in love with any of the backgrounds, though. What a bout a small text print in a neutral color? Something like: http://www.etsy.com/shop/carmenjass/search?search_query=wordplay&order=date_desc&view_type=gallery&ref=shop_search

  6. The grey is STUNNING, It allows the blocks to stand out and doesn't try to take over the show

  7. Black and White dots. I think I may be in the minority though!

  9. I love the FMF print, but think it's just too busy and ends up competing with your beautiful star flowers. I think that any solid you go with is going to look good -- some will provide negative space (the lighter colors) while others will draw the focus to them (the darker colors). Do whichever makes you happy. I've started looking at my old quilts pieced together by previous generations when I face a dilemma like this, just so I can get a feel for what fabrics work. Often times I'll see a light blue or pale pink or even a subtle yellow with something like this. :)

Good luck with your feet -- at least you've found something that works. :) Your stars are quite beautiful, by the way.

  13. I really feel the gray works best. To me it kind of fades into a backdrop & lets your beautiful blocks shine through.

  14. I really like the grey or black best. They really set off your stunning blocks!

  15. I agree with the grey or the black. The grey recedes more, the black pops more. I also like the turquoise but it is too bright. A softer turquoise might look good. Beautiful star blocks!

  16. First - I love these blocks!!!!

Second - I vote Grey! Or white. :)

  17. This sounds like me trying to figure out what to put inbetween my scrappy stars. While grey seems to be trending these days, visually I believe it becomes like a "hole" in a quilt--would rather see a quilter's linen in another color, than use gray. But that's just my personal preference. I'm impressed with your progress!!

  18. I´d go for grey or white. But I like grey better. You could use your aqua flea market fancy fabric on some of the stars but for me it would be too busy for the background.

  19. I like the grey or black best, though dots may well work! Look forward to seeing a result!

  20. Grey or black seems to be the overwhelming favourite and I have to say that they would be my choices as well. You are so right about the FMF being too much for the gorgeous blocks. Good luck with your decision!

  21. I'm going with the consensus, gray is fabulous - the stars are busy, so though the blue floral looks great, its definitely a bit busy on the eyes -- the gray makes the starts pop without being too much, great stars!

  22. I was going to say gray until you mentioned a black and white dots option. It might look awesome or you might get back into the taking over the quilt problem. I guess it would depend on the scale of the dots. I guess you're just goung to have to add the beautiful FMF to your stash, bummer. :)

  23. I think the black and white dot would look awesome. My other choice would be a red and white dot. Your quilt will be great no matter what you choose.

  24. Black and white fabric would really make this quilt pop!

  25. I'd vote for a charcoal... Darker gray then you have, but not black... I'm thinking something with the "flavor" of a tweed yarn? So, I guess not solid, either :-)

  26. I like the grey too, although I like the dots idea as well!
Make sure you don't cross your legs! :) x

  27. I love your blocks. It looks to me like you did not use a blue/turquoise because you planned the fmf. I wonder if you used a turquoise/blue with a small dot or else I would lean to the black and white dots. I guess although I love solids, I lean toward a print in there rather than a total solid. The thing is that I do like the fmf too.
