My Tree Quilt

This week my kids watched a bunch of TV, ate picnics outside (because the table was covered in fabric!) and my house looks like a tornado hit it, but I made a quilt in one week!  I had planned to enter this quilt into the State Fair and realized Tuesday that the due date was this Saturday not next Saturday!  I didn't think it was possible, but I finished it and turned it in with 15 minutes to spare.  :)

I am loving it.  I think tree quilts are my thing.  I think it is the only type of quilt I have made multiple times.  The original Tree Quilt, the Baby Tree Quilt, the Commissioned Tree Quilt and now My Tree Quilt.

I quilted it by writing the names of different trees across the quilt.  More closeups later.  The backing was some vintage cloth from my friend's grandmother's stash.  In fact, I didn't have to buy anything for this quilt, which was good because I didn't have time to run into town.  :)  The cut down tree was the idea of my friend Eva-Marie.  I love it!

I also turned in my circle of geese block for the Quilt Block competition.  I reduced the pattern by 75% so that it met the 9.5 inch size requirement.  I love this pattern!   Wanting to make a circle of geese block was what motivated me to learn how to paper piece last year.

Now I am going to take a deep breath, relax and clean the house.  ;)

  2. I love your cut down tree and the piecing you did on all of them. I hope one of us from the DSMMQG wins the prize we sponsored.

  7. The quilt & the block both look fantastic!

I really wanted to enter stuff into the state fair here (Ohio) this year. Not sewn items yet, still need more practice, but some embroidered stuff and a big huge crocheted doily that's 90% done. The due date snuck up on me, though -- I thought it was July 20th but it turned out to be June 20th because they do the judging for most of the creative arts categories before the fair and the fair is held late July/early August, and there was just no way I could have the doily finished and blocked by the deadline. Next year for sure! I'm hoping to be able to enter a quilt by next year, too, at least a mini-quilt if not a full-size one.

I wish there was a block competition here like there is in your state. That would be really fun.

  8. Your tree quilt is wonderful! Housework be darned! Your quilt was worth every moment spent on it, and I too love the cut down tree. Such a clever idea that adds so much to the quilt. I'm glad you finished it in time to enter. Oh how I wish I was going to the fair!

Love your Circle of Geese block, but then that's been a long-time favorite block of mine. Your 9-1/2" size is great, but your color choices are even better.

You're making some lovely things, Leila. Do be sure to let us know when you receive a ribbon at the fair!

  10. Hi Leila, I found your blog through Fabric Tuesday on Quilt Story. I love tree quilts and it was such a pleasure to see yours and then click and see the variety of them that you made. I have not made one but knowing that you did that fun one in only a week inspires me to not think of it as too overwhelming a project. It was fun to look around your blog. Good luck to you!
